Istanbul Convention: Hamburg politicians attack Turkey’s President Erdogan

71 Hamburg parliamentarians from the SPD, Greens, CDU and Left Party are demanding that the Turkish government return to the Istanbul Convention. “We stand by the side of the women’s movement in Turkey in solidarity,” it said in a joint statement distributed on Monday.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also calls for the suspension of the proceedings against the pro-Kurdish opposition party HDP “and the release of those imprisoned for political reasons”. “As the undersigned, we stand by the side of the democratic forces in Turkey.”

Worldwide outrage: Erdogan announced withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention

Erdogan had declared Turkey’s withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention for the Protection of Women by decree a good week ago and thus aroused outrage around the world.
