FDP Zoff in Hamburg: boss throws MPs from the presidium

And you’re out: The new FDP leader has thrown his only member of parliament from the party presidium. Officially for formal reasons and to strengthen the state executive. But does Michael Kruse really only want to get rid of an unloved party friend?

Michael Kruse (FDP) has just been elected as the new head of his party, and there are already the first riots. Because he unceremoniously threw the only FDP member of the citizenry, Anna von Treuenfels-Frowein, out of the presidium. It’s not that bad, says the Kruse camp. For those who keep it with Treuenfels-Frowein, it is again a dirty foul game.

Zoff at the FDP: boss throws MPs from the presidium

The Presidium is the leading body within parties when it comes to political and organizational work. Although there is still the state executive committee, the innermost circle of power meets in the presidium. Usually a person from the parliamentary group sits in the Hamburg FDP presidium. However, since the FDP no longer has a parliamentary group in the citizenship since the election debacle in 2020 and Anna von Treuenfels-Frowein sits as a lonely member of the town hall thanks to her direct mandate, there has now been an internal dispute within the party.

More than a yellow card: FDP leader Michael Kruse no longer wants his only MP, Anna von Treuenfels-Frowein, in the presidium.

Formally, Treuenfels-Frowein is not entitled to a seat on the presidium due to the fact that she is non-attached, but in the end she was still a guest at the table. New FDP leader Kruse put an end to it. Officially, because Treuenfels-Frowein no longer has the right to permanent membership and because Kruse wants to convert the state board into the actual center of power. “The presidium should have a preparatory role for the state executive,” said Kruse about the MOPO. In the future, decisions should only be made by the regional executive committee, which has more than 20 members; the presidium would be primarily responsible for organizational work.

Dismissal: Formal reasons or power-political dodging?

Not all party friends believe that it is therefore not so important to bring the members of the parliament directly into the presidium and that Kruse acts purely pragmatically. The head of the Young Liberals, Carl Cevin-Key Coste, had tried to move Treuenfels-Frowein back to the presidium. But the state board thwarted the request with 17: 3 votes. “It would be important to have a close connection between the presidium and the citizens,” complains Coste. Others point out that Kruse and Treuenfels-Frowein couldn’t stand each other. The party leader denies that. Treuenfels-Frowein himself did not want to comment on her expulsion from the presidium.

An experienced FDPler on the whole presidium farce: “That was a cheap mistake by Kruse. It would have been an easy opportunity to have a reconciling effect here and to bring Treuenfels-Frowein into the presidium. “
